Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex will offer a variety of programs in the month of May.
Kinzua Bridge State Park
Sunday, May 18th at 11:00am – Intro to Archery – Practice your archery skills in a safe and fun environment! We will cover the necessary safety procedures of shooting a bow, as well as the technical skills involved in hitting a target. Target and bows provided. This program is free and open to the public. Meet on the eastern side of the building.
Monday, May 26th at 11:00am – Ask the Naturalist – The park naturalist will be roving around the park to answer questions about nature and history.
Monday, May 26th at 12:00pm – Memorial Day Tribute: The Reading of Special Order #11 – To commemorate Memorial Day, join us for a brief history about “Remembrance Day” and the reading of a portion of Special Order #11. Veterans – this one’s for you! Meet outside the visitor center near the flag.
Bendigo State Park
Saturday, May 17th from 12:00pm to 4:00pm – Remake Learning Days: Birding for Beginners – Learn a new hobby that you can do from the comfort of your own back yard; join our DCNR staff near the pool and picnic area for an introduction to birding, and binocular use! Take a quick lesson on how to use a pair of binoculars and then walk the park to practice it yourself on the songbirds, raptors, and waterfowl that frequent this area. Learn how to utilize popular birding apps like Merlin to make birding easier and more accessible! A limited number of binoculars will be available for use, but participants are encouraged to bring a pair if they have them. This program will be canceled in the event of adverse weather conditions.
Saturday, May 24th from 12:00pm to 3:00pm – Stream Scoop! – Want to hear the scoop about the stream remediation project happening at Bendigo State Park this fall? Stop by the pop-up table near the pool and playground area. Learn how the project will benefit stream life, the ecosystem, and humans alike! This program will be postponed in the event of adverse weather conditions.
Sunday, May 25th from 10:00am to 2:00pm – Women’s Learn to Fish Day – Women - Learn proper casting, knot tying and what fish eat! Then try your luck at fishing in the East Branch of the Clarion River at Bendigo State Park! Time permitting - a hike on the Eagle Trail to check out the Eastern Hemlocks, a trout's friend. Water and snacks provided by Trout Unlimited! You need to register for this event by calling (814) 778-5467. This event is free. Meet at pavilion #2 behind the pool. Dress for the weather. Bring your own bug spray and sunscreen. Sponsored by Trout Unlimited and DCNR!
Elk State Park
Sunday, May 18th from 12:00pm to 2:00pm – Spring Birding on Maple Trail – Take a relaxing springtime walk on Maple Trail with a pair of binoculars to spot birds around East Branch Lake! Bring your own or borrow a pair from DCNR staff. Pick up a bird identification guide at the start of the trail to help you along your way and hear from our staff about free birding apps that make the hobby even more accessible! Meet at the start of Maple Trail near the Army Corp Boat Launch.
