Every now and then someone dropping off recycling will be pleasantly surprised that we take cans. Especially steel cans. Yes, we do! Metal is one of those recycling streams that is truly closed loop. Metal cans are melted down and turned into new cans and other metal-containing products. We have been taking steel and aluminum cans, as well as aluminum foil, since we opened the doors of the recycling center in October 2010. Combined, we recycled about nine tons of cans and foil last year, but we know there are literally tons more that are being thrown away. Recycling cans is easy. Paper labels don't have to be removed (unless you want to and recycle that paper), the can just needs a quick rinse and….that's it! Bag 'em up or box them or whatever works for you and get them to the recycling center. As for aluminum foil and other disposable aluminum pans, etc., just make sure they are relatively free of food stuffs. Way, way back in the day the Benedictine Sisters recycled aluminum foil as part of their extensive community-based recycling program. When we opened the center, we were asked whether we could collect foil as well and so we did. While it doesn't add up to much tonnage-wise, we are recycling a commodity that does not need to be thrown away.
