Cameron County Chamber of Commerce is getting support to increase energy efficiency in a USDA/FDA kitchen. A USDA-certified kitchen is a testament to a commitment to food safety and quality, providing a pathway for local businesses to thrive in the marketplace while ensuring consumer confidence. The grant from West Penn Energy Fund totaling $65,467 will be used to purchase energy star rated equipment including an induction range, reach in refrigerator, freezer and a stirling ultra-low temperature freezer.
The chamber purchased the former Cabin Kitchen Restaurant in February. Office space has been renovated to house Pennsylvania CareerLink and Northern Pennsylvania Regional College along with chamber staff and the artisan center. “The final piece is renovation to the kitchen area”, according to executive director Tina Solak. The facility will have operational approval from USDA enabling entrepreneurs to make and package shelf stable products.
The partnership with West Penn Energy Fund introducing induction cooking to a large-scale operation will serve the region as a model for restaurants and cafeterias. Induction stoves are more energy-efficient, cook faster, and are easier to clean, with better temperature control than natural gas and the glass surface only gets hot where it's in contact with cookware, reducing the risk of accidental burns.
West Penn Energy Fund Administrator, Joel Morrison, said “We wanted Cameron County to be seen as a leader and this USDA Certified kitchen becomes a competitive edge for local entrepreneurs and the energy savings means that the county can put more of its financial resources back into programs that support the community. This project will also provide a platform to educate end users and members of the regional community about new cooking technologies and responsible energy use.”
In addition to the kitchen equipment, entrepreneurs will have the opportunity to take business related classes in Emporium offered by Penn State Extension. Northern Pennsylvania Regional College plans to offer culinary boot camp classes at the facility. Officials say the facility will be fully functional by late summer.
