Christine J. Sweeney, 82, St. Marys

Christine J. Sweeney, 82, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 646 Vermont Road, St. Marys, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 9, 2026.


She was born January 7, 1944, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Alfred and Alberta Lecker Sorg. She was a lifelong resident of St. Marys, a graduate of Elk County Christian High School and was employed as a Registered Nurse for 57 years at both Ridgway and St. Marys hospitals. Christine also took great pride in her role as Head of Personnel for Andrew Kaul and Elk Regional Hospital where she developed lasting friendships with her colleagues.


On October 6, 1966, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Christine married the late Richard J. Sweeney, who preceded her in death November 14, 2024.


Christine is survived by her sister, Lynn Sorg of St. Marys; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Rettger and Irene “Tootie” Geyer; Godchildren: Carl Weidenboerner and Ann Weglin; nieces: Katie and Shelly Rettger and Becki Kopp; and nephews: Bernie, Henry, and Matt Rettger.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a nephew, Brian Geyer.


Christine lived a life rooted in faith, family, service, and love of country. She was a devoted Catholic and an active member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church for 58 years where she attended daily Mass for over 30 years and cherished her small group of friends who would pray the rosary with her every Tuesday. She was a lifelong member of the Republican Party and believed deeply in civic engagement and responsible citizenship.


A Mass of Christian Burial will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 315 Church Street, St. Marys, PA 15857 on Monday, July 13, 2026 at 10:00AM with Rev. Ignatius Camello, O.S.B., celebrating. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church from 9:30AM until the time of Mass.


Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to Pinecrest Manor Nursing Home, 763 Johnsonburg Road, St. Marys, PA 15857. The family and friends of Chris would like to thank the staff for their exceptional care, kindness, and compassion.
