Halloween is one of the most popular events celebrated by children and adults. Parents or guardians should have a conversation with your kids and review some tips to keep them safe. Children are more than twice as likely to be struck by an automobile and lose their life on Halloween than any other time of the year. So here is some helpful

information for parents, guardians, drivers and children to help keep everyone safe.

Be visible. Make sure your child carries a flashlight or glow stick so that they are visible to motorists. Bright and reflective costumes or costumes with reflective tape/decals are also helpful. Use costumes that do not impede vision. Wear close fitting masks with large eye openings. You can also use non-toxic paint or make up to avoid any obstruction of vision. Always test any make up or paint first to make sure they do not cause any skin or eye irritation.

Use sidewalks if available. Otherwise, always walk facing traffic and as far to the left as possible. Cross streets at corners using crosswalks and remember to STOP and LOOK both ways. LISTEN before crossing. DON'T run!! Never cross between parked vehicles.

We ask that drivers especially keep a watchful eye and be alert for children who are usually excited about trick or treating and pay little attention to traffic and other dangers. Slower speeds save lives.

Trick or treat in areas and neighborhoods that you and your child know well.

That will also add to a happy and safe time.

Plan your child's route and ensure that your children travel in groups. Use the buddy system. Do not walk alone. Schedule a time for them to return home.

It is very important to put all electronic devices and cell phones away.

Keep your head up and always be aware of your surroundings.

For your younger child or children make it a time that they will remember.

Enjoy the experience and walk with them so they are properly supervised.

Only visit well-lit houses with porch lights on and NEVER go inside if invited.

A parent or supervising adult should examine all treats before they are consumed by children. Consume only factory wrapped treats. Homemade treats or candies with loose wrappers should be discarded.

Remember that damaging other people's property by playing pranks is a crime. If you see any mischief or criminal activity occurring, call your local police and report the incident. In case of an emergency dial 911.

Your Elk County Sheriff’s Office wishes everyone an enjoyable and safe

Halloween.
