Kinzua Bridge State Park Complex will offer a variety of programs in the month of October at Kinzua Bridge State Park, Bendigo State Park, and Elk State Park. Please dress for the weather for any programs held outdoors. If you have any questions, contact the park office at (814)778-5467.
Kinzua Bridge State Park:
Saturday, October 12th at 3:00pm – Leave the Leaves! – Drop your rake and join our staff at the pop-up table outside, near the skywalk. Learn about how many insects and critters spend the winter under leaf piles, and how the simple act of leaving the fall leaves on the ground can help support their populations!
Sunday, October 13th, and Sunday October 27th at 8:00am – Birding from the Bridge – View birds from the Bridge! Bring your own binoculars or borrow a pair from the park on a first come, first served basis. Binocular instructions for beginners! Meet in front of the visitor center.
Saturday, October 19th at 3:00pm – Zombie Deer?! – Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) was only discovered less than 50 years ago, and plagues deer populations across the world. With deer hunting season right around the corner, learn from our staff about the history and spread of CWD in Pennsylvania, as well as resources available for deer testing. Meet in the upper floor exhibits for this program.
Sunday, October 20th at 3:00pm – Turkey Talk – Turkey season is right around the corner, so it’s the perfect time to brush up on your history of this well-known game bird! Join our staff in the top floor exhibits to hear about how turkeys were a rare sight in PA forests during the 1900s, but good conservation efforts helped to bring their population numbers back from the brink.
Sunday, October 20th and Saturday, October 26th at 11:00am – BATS! – Why are people afraid of bats? Stop in the visitor center to find possible answers.
Saturday, October 26th at 3:00pm – Tick or Treat! – Vampires aren’t the only bloodsuckers you need to be wary of! Meet our staff in the top floor exhibits to hear about different tick species in Pennsylvania, and how you can protect yourself from tick bites and tick-borne diseases while enjoying the outdoors this fall.
Elk State Park:
Sunday, October 13th from 3:00pm to 5:00pm – Ghosts on the Grade – Join our staff at the Instanter Boat Launch at Elk State Park. Hear about the villages of Instanter and Straight that were once stops along the Johnsonburg Clermont Railroad, but now lay at the bottom of East Branch Clarion River Lake. View tools and items pulled from the mud that were once used by the villagers of Instanter. Bring your boots and take a walk around the shoreline among the foundations of these long-lost villages.
