Flu season is approaching, and Penn Highlands Healthcare is making it convenient for individuals and families to protect themselves with an annual flu vaccine.

Flu shots will be available beginning today, October 1, 2026, at Penn Highlands Retail Pharmacies and select Penn Highlands clinics throughout Pennsylvania.

Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness that can lead to severe health complications, hospitalizations and lost time from work or school. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that during the 2025-2026 flu season, there were more than 31 million flu cases, 390,000 hospitalizations and 24,000 deaths nationwide.

Annual vaccination is the single most effective way to reduce the risk of contracting the flu and prevent spreading it to vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults and individuals with chronic health conditions.

“Getting your flu shot each year is one of the simplest steps you can take to help protect yourself and those around you during flu season,” said Trina Johnson, DO, MBA, System Chief Medical Officer at Penn Highlands Healthcare. “Because flu viruses constantly evolve, an annual vaccine ensures your immune system has the most up-to-date protection. Taking a few minutes to get vaccinated helps shield not only yourself, but also family members, co-workers and neighbors who may be at high risk for serious complications.”

Community members can receive their flu shots at Penn Highlands Retail Pharmacies and clinic locations across the state. To learn more about the flu vaccine or find a clinic or pharmacy near you, visit www.phhealthcare.org/flushots.

Penn Highlands Healthcare accepts most major insurance plans, including Medicare and all Medicare Advantage plans. Patients are asked to bring their insurance card to their appointment or visit.
