The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Elk County the week of August 17. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Elk County for the coming week is as follows:
Line Painting
Route 1002 (Taft Road) between Challingsworth Road and Windfall Road in the City of St. Marys. Tuesday, August 18, and Wednesday, August 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours and may deploy a pilot vehicle. When encountering a pilot vehicle with a “Pilot Car Follow Me” sign mounted on the rear and a revolving yellow light, drivers must remain behind it until it has left the roadway. Do not pass.
Route 1001 (Glen Hazel Road) between Shields Road in the City of St. Marys and Sauer Road in Jones Township. Tuesday, August 18, through Friday, August 21.
Each year, PennDOT line painting crews apply more than 1.6 million gallons of yellow and white waterborne traffic line paint to highways to help guide motorists. PennDOT paint crews focus on road and highway dividing lines but also paint railroad crossing markings, arrow directional markings, and legends such as STOP markings. Beads made of recycled glass are simultaneously applied to the wet paint, making the markings visible at night to motorists because these glass beads are retroreflective.
Pipe Replacement & Cleaning
Route 2004 (Quehanna Highway) between Route 555 and Losey Road in Benezette Township. Monday, August 17, through Friday, August 21.
Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.
This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.
