Just like the rest of the United States, health providers in Pennsylvania are seeing an increase in the number of COVID-19 in all communities.
"It happens every year around Labor Day," explained Trina Abla, DO, MBA, System Chief Medical Officer for Penn Highlands Healthcare. "The increase in cases is a result from people coming back from vacations and children returning to the classroom."
Dr. Abla cautions that a new variant is among those making people ill. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the current COVID-19 wave is being fueled by highly contagious variants including the NB.1.8.1 also referred to as "razorblade," which is spreading rapidly worldwide.
The CDC also reports that throughout the U.S., emergency department visits for COVID-19 are rising among people of all ages, with the largest increase in children under age 12. The symptoms of the new variant appear to be similar to other recent variants including:
• Painful sore throat
• Cough
• Congestion or runny nose
• Fever or chills
• Shortness of breath
• New loss of sense of taste or smell
• Fatigue
• Headache
• Muscle aches
• Nausea, vomiting or diarrhea
It is important to take precautions to protect yourself and your loved ones from contracting the virus. Precautions include:
• Wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings or if you have COVID-19 symptoms
• Practicing social distancing in public places
• Remaining vigilant with hand hygiene
• Staying up-to-date on your vaccine
The COVID-19 vaccine is one of the safest ways to protect against severe illness and hospitalization. The latest vaccine targets the variants currently circulating in our communities. It is highly recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.
If everyone follows these precautions, you may avoid contracting the virus and enjoy the upcoming fall season.
