Update On Measles Outbreak In Pennsylvania

Two additional measles-related deaths in Pennsylvania since Sunday means the deadliest outbreak in more than three decades for Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that an 18-year-old had died of measles complications, 48 hours after the Jefferson County Corner confirmed the death of a 40-year-old woman from the disease.

The last time there were four or more measles deaths nationwide was in the early 1990s, according to World Health Organization data. Measles was declared eradicated from the United States in 2000, but a series of outbreaks over the past decade — coinciding with declining vaccination rates — have called that into question.
