The predicted high temperatures for Weekend in the Wilds forcing organizers to start Saturday vendor event events earlier in the day. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Solak says Friday starts at 11am, but Saturday vendors and music will begin at 9am to take advantage of cooler temperatures.
Weekend in the Wilds celebrates the 250th birthday of the United States. The chamber will be serving cupcakes to the first 250 people through the door starting at 11am on Friday. This year the chamber website has been updated daily with details and changes to the schedule. Recently added is the music schedule. Old Skool will kick off the event in the town square Friday at 11am and play until 3pm when Phaser will take the stage. At 6pm the Firequacker Duck Derby will take place at the Oak Street flood project. Ducks will continue to be adopted online and at the chamber until 5pm Friday. Fireworks are scheduled to fill the sky starting at 9:45pm. Again, organizers alert visitors that if a pop-up storm is predicted, the fireworks could be moved to an earlier or later start.
Mountaineer Search & Rescue kicks off Saturday morning with the annual big foot hunt. New this year is a requirement that successful hunters snap a picture of the location where the foot is found. Also celebrating the 250 birthday means that all hunters will receive a commemorative coin. Vendors will line the street and Phaser will kick off the event in the town square 9-noon. The Dawn Lynn band will finish out the day. A tent with seating will provide visitors with shade and a place to enjoy a picnic. The Cameron County SPCA will conclude its basket raffle at the chamber office at 1pm. Mountaineer Search & Rescue will award the big foot hunt prizes at downtown square at 2pm.
