Greta A. Challingsworth, 60, of Ridgway, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at her residence.
She was born on December 21, 1965, in Ridgway, a daughter of the late Carmen Martino and Bonnie Johnson Hoffman.
On May 22, 1999, in Ridgway, she married Fred Challingsworth, who survives.
Greta was a graduate of Ridgway High School Class of 1984 and later graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with an art major. She served in the U.S Army for 20 years as a cook and in fuel supply. She was stationed at Colorado Springs, CO., and Germany, and also did training in Okinawa, Japan. During her time in Japan, she hiked up Mt. Fuji. She retired from the Army as a staff Sgt.
In addition to her husband of 27 years, she is survived by her son, Damian Challingsworth of Ridgway, a daughter, Alexia Challingsworth (Danny Mehok) of Dubois, a sister, Marcella Martino (Tim Schneider) of Ridgway, her niece, Mallory Smith (Dan Serge) of St. Marys, her 2 nephews, Sebastian Smith and Bailey Schatz both of Ridgway, and 2 great nephews Dominic Cantwell and Dimitri Serge of St. Marys that were very dear to her. She is also survived by a mother-in-law, Sandy Challingsworth of St. Marys, brothers and sister in laws, Dave (Julie) Challingsworth and Jimmy (Sam) Challingsworth of St. Marys, and several nieces and nephews: Dustin, Sasha, DJ, Emily, and Maggie.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Art and Mary Johnson, her paternal grandparents, Ruben and Virginia Martino, a step grandmother, Margaret Capuano Martino, and her father-in-law, James Challingsworth.
Greta was very artistic and hand painted the baptism mural at the Church of Christ and also had paintings featured in the newspapers. She loved the holidays and always decorated her house inside and out, especially for Halloween. Greta was very passionate about planting flowers and vegetables, and very proudly showed them off to all. She was also a co owner of M & M Creations with her late stepmother, Sonnie Martino. She was a member of the Ridgway Eagles and Ridgway American Legion.
Greta was very passionate about cooking and baking, and loved feeding people. She had a huge heart for animals, especially her own pets. Greta loved music and attended many concerts with her sister Marcella and enjoyed going to dances that her daughter's boyfriend, Danny, DJ'd at. She even handmade her own outfits for the disco shows.
Funeral Services for Greta A. Challingsworth will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Krise Funeral Home, 130 Center Street, Ridgway, PA 15853, with Pastor Ron Burkett officiating.
Military honors will be accorded by the Ridgway, Johnsonburg, and Wilcox Burial Detail.
Family and friends will be received on Saturday at Krise Funeral home from 10:00 AM till the time of service.
