J. Leo Mahoney, age 84, of Ridgway-Johnsonburg Road, Johnsonburg, PA, died unexpectedly, surrounded by his grandchildren, on July 11, 2026. A son of the late William A. and Winifred I. (Conneen) Mahoney, he was born on October 3, 1941 in Johnsonburg. On May 8, 1965 he married Elizabeth “Betty” (Pavlock), who predeceased him on December 27, 2016.
Along with his parents and his wife, Leo was predeceased by two children, David and Susan Mahoney; three brothers, Joseph, Gerald and Jack Mahoney; and two sisters, Lorena Hoh and Patricia Blashaw.
Leo is survived by six grandchildren, Joshua Spare, Chelsey (Morgan) Murry, Marissa (David) Lawrie, Kylie Mahoney, Haley (Tyler) Shilk and Nathan Mahoney; five great-grandchildren; a brother, William Mahoney; and a daughter-in-law, Wendy Mahoney.
Leo worked most of his life at Stackpole Carbon and the Johnsonburg Paper Mill. He was one of a kind. His wardrobe reflected his personality – practical, humorous and unmistakably “Him” with his collection of hats, dew rags and funny t-shirts. He loved making his rounds to visit his friends daily. He loved and cherished his family, but more than anything he loved Betty with his whole heart. Their love was steady, faithful and something everyone admired. I’m sure their reunion was sweet. He leaves behind so many memories filled with laughter, stories and the little quirks that made him unforgettable. We will miss hearing him gripe and making us smile without even trying.
There will be no visitation.
