Joseph P. “Butchy” Cherry, 84, of 455 West Mill Street, St. Marys, and formerly of Third Avenue, Johnsonburg, passed away Wednesday afternoon, November 5, 2025, at Penn Highlands-Elk, St. Marys, following a lengthy illness. He was born July 4, 1941, in Johnsonburg, a son to the late Anthony J. “Toe” and Emily Papa Cherry.
A resident of St. Marys for the past 5 years, Butchy had lived most his life in Johnsonburg. He attended Johnsonburg Public Schools and was a member of Holy Rosary Church. He was a loving and playful grandfather, he loved everything about food and loved to watch the Food Network. He enjoyed watching his favorite television shows, Gunsmoke and Everybody Loves Raymond and he was ever trusting in the fact that he would someday win the lottery.
In 1996, Butch retired from PennDot after 31 years of service.
Butchy is survived by his daughter Jolene Genevro (Brock) of St. Mary and his grandchildren Caylene Gilmore (Logan) and Gianna Genevro, a brother John J. “Chisel” Cherry (Sally) of Johnsonburg and a sister Elaine M. Myers (Roger) of Johnsonburg. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Butchy is predeceased by brothers Joe Joe, Louis A. “LuLu” and Thomas Cherry and sisters Anna M. “Annie” Polaski and Janet Esposito and 2 brothers and 1 sister in infancy.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph P. “Butchy” Cherry will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church on Friday November 14, 2025, at 10 AM with Fr. David Wilson, Pastor, as celebrant. Interment will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home and Cremation Services Chapel, 401 Chestnut Street, Johnsonburg on Thursday evening from 6 to 8 PM.
